World's Second Android Phone - HTC Magic

Despite all the hoopla surrounding Google's Android open-source operating system for smartphones, so far only one phone is available to date that actually runs the Android OS--the HTC Dream (also knon as the T-Mobile G1). The HTC Dream is finally going to get some company in the form of only the second official Android phone to be announced--also from HTC--the HTC Magic.

The HTC Magic will start shipping in "the spring," and it will initially only be available in Europe. European mobile phone service provider, Vodafone, snagged the initial exclusive rights to sell the HTC Magic in the U.K., Spain, Germany, and France (via SFR, which is co-owned by Vivendi and Vodafone). Vodafone claims that the HTC Magic will be "available from free on various price plans." The only place the HTC Dream will initially be available where it will not tied exclusively to a contract with Vodafone, will be in Italy. HTC promises that the HTC Magic will be available in more countries at a later date, presumably including the U.S.

Tilera has recently introduced world's first 100-core processor. The model named as Tilera 100-core Tile-GX Processor. The TILE-Gx family, fabricated in TSMC's 40 nanometer process, operates at up to 1.5 GHz with power consumption ranging from 10 to 55 watts. The TILE-Gx family incorporates many cores on a single chip together with integrated memory controllers and a set of I/O. However the TILE-Gx device also brings together a number of new features to maximize application performance while offering the best performance-per-watt in the industry.
"The launch of the TILE-Gx family, including the world's first 100-core microprocessor, ushers in a new era of many-core processing. We believe this next generation of high-core count, ultra high-performance chips will open completely new computing possibilities," said Tilera's Omid Tahernia.

PROCESSOR'S FEATURES:
* New three-issue 64-bit core with full virtual memory system. Each core includes 32KB L1 I-cache, 32KB L1 D-cache and 256KB L2 cache, with up to 26MB total L3 coherent cache across the device.
* Enhanced SIMD instruction extensions: Improved signal processing performance with a 4 MAC/cycle multiplier unit delivering up to 600 billion MACs per second.
* Integrated high-performance DDR3 memory controllers: Two or four 72-bit controllers running up to 2133 MHz speeds with ECC support. Up to 1TB total capacity.
* Hardware acceleration engines: On-chip MiCA (Multistream iMesh Crypto Accelerator) system delivers up to 40Gbps encryption and 20Gbps full duplex compression processing, tightly coupled to the iMesh for extremely low latency and wire-speed small packet throughput. In addition, a high-performance true random number generator (RNG) and public key accelerator enable up to 50,000 RSA handshakes per second.
* Packet processing accelerator: mPIPE (multicore Programmable Intelligent Packet Engine) system provides wire-speed packet classification, load balancing and buffer management. This C-programmable engine delivers 80 Gbps and 120 million packets-per-second of throughput for packets with multiple layers of encapsulation.

Vioguard UVKB50 keyboard sanitizes itself with UV light

Among the many benefits of working from home is that you don’t have to worry about nasty coworkers getting you sick with their cold and flu germs. Still, with any shared computer in the home or office, you run the chance of contaminating each other. The keyboard is one of those places in the home where germs lurk because most keyboards simply can’t stand up to sanitation.

vioguardkeyboard

A company called Vioguard has announced a new keyboard called the UVKB50 that is a self-sanitizing unit that uses UV light to kill germs. According to the manufacturer, the UV light is powerful enough to kill the dreaded H1N1 swine flu that is making its rounds. The light also kills other types of germs like MRSA and more.

The keyboard slides into a tray that you LCD sits on. Inside the enclosed tray is a UV light source with 50-watts of UV light that can kill 99.99% of harmful bacteria and viruses in seconds. Too bad the light can’t glean the Cheetos crumbs from between my keys too. The bad news is that the keyboard costs more than many computers at $899. Shipments are set to start in November to consumers.

Lenovo gets official with Win7-powered IdeaPad and IdeaCentre machines

Lenovo already got official with a couple of its Windows 7-powered machines last week, but it looks like the rest of the crop is landing today. Of course, we've already seen the 11.6-inch IdeaPad U150 and 15.6-inch U550 pop up in various corners of the globe this month, and the IdeaPad U350 has been around since the summer. That said, we'll take the OS refresh and minor spec bumps any day of the week (along with new colors on the S10-2), and that's exactly what we're getting. We'll spare you the rehash (it's all there in the read link if you need a refresher), but over on the desktop front, we're pretty stoked about the stylish (and previously rumored) all-in-one IdeaCentre B500. Packing a Core 2 Quad CPU, 1TB of HDD space, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM and a 23-inch LCD, this thing may actually perform fairly well in tasks more strenuous than checking email. The business-minded K300 and bargain-priced H230 ($299 starting point) are less thrilling from a hardware perspective, but they'll certainly fit their respective molds quite well. The whole lot should be available to order soon directly from Lenovo, and there's bound to be plenty of options for those not content with base configurations.

PR shots for Renu's solar powered iPhone charger, desk lamp

Sure, we've been frustrated by solar-powered iPhone chargers and amused by the irony of solar-powered lamps in the past, but that doesn't mean we're not looking forward to the day when we can meet our gadgets power needs without relying on fossil fuels. That's why we're pleased to note that a company called ReNu has just announced a solar panel that can be used to charge your iPhone or iPod, power the device's sound dock, or even keep your desk light shining sans mains power. Featuring a modular design, the panel can dispatched to your window to soak up the rays for 10 or 20 hours (depending on the amount of sunlight it receives) and then returned to your dock for about nine hours of music playback, recharge your iPhone (twice!), or provide about four hours of light with the LED desk lamp. Of course, most people are going to hang this thing in the window once, forget about it, and then spend the next several years powering their devices with the included AC adapter -- but at least they're trying, right? Available for pre-order now, the ReNu solar panel ($199) and the Renu panel / iPod dock combo ($249) both ship in February 2010, while the Side Light desk lamp ($89) ships in next March, and the Sound Dock ($149) should see the light of day sometime in April. Hit the read link to place that order, but not before peeping the galley below.

Sega lighters light your cigarettes with nostalgia

These amazing custom Zippo lighters are designed to look like the Sega Genesis and the Sega Saturn, and my god, do they look great. Even better: they're officially licensed by Sega! Which probably is why they cost $114 each, which is close to how much these systems cost when they were first released. But man, I don't even smoke and I want that Genesis one. So damned cool.

Signs In The Dark

The idea of a lit-up handrail for public places is not quite new, but adding the features of an e-paper display with laser-engraving tech is unique. The Light Handrail is just this concept, with e-paper displays lined at appropriate distances. Usage scenario includes doling out advertisements, mock-up scenes or useful information like how to find the nearest exit during an emergency. In auditoriums and dimly-lit places, this hand-rail can be an added attraction, like the exotic flower one greeting the visitors!
